Long Staff Jo Spiral

The Long Staff Jo is shorter than a Bo. It is made from fine, peeled Rattan as well. Therefore, it is very flexible and also robust. The staff fits the hand perfectly.

The Long Staff Jo was developed as a variation of the Bo in Japan. Traditionally, long staffs were used by farmers and rural people. Later the Samurai integrated these simple but effective weapons into their combat arts. Today the Jo Long Staff is used in many styles of martial arts, for example in Aikido, Karate or Kobudo. Training with a Jo can be sparring with a partner. Very common is also the combination of several techniques in a form, sometimes referred to as kata.

In modern martial arts these traditional weapons like Long Staffs are used to improve coordination and skillfulness. While using the Jo the whole body is involved in the movements, different groups of muscles are working together. Besides training at the dojo also solo training at home improves the overall abilities of the fighter. That’s why many scholars of modern systems discover the advantages the traditional long staffs today and see them as an asset to broaden their workout.
